  • Cassandra Harrington wrote on on 18 Mar 2013

Hi there, our names are Paul and Cassandra,  We are willing to travel anywhere in the country (or even outside of it) at this time for different opportunities. Really, this is a message to tell you a bit about our personality, work ethic, experience, and lifestyle, and if it resonates with you we would would love to take the next step and speak on the tele, skype, or email. We are emailing you specifically because we have an interest in what we have read about your farm and would like to know more. We are a strong couple looking to further explore homesteading/permaculture/ biodynamic farming and community living. We are on the search for where we would like to build a home and are taking this year to explore communities and hone in on our skills and interests together. We still have a lot to learn before we do it ourselves. We are more than willing to settle in one location for the season if we feel we have found a place sharing a common vision but are equally open to shorter stays. We would like to be around positive and uplifting people with a sense of humor and an honest outlook. We are looking for a welcoming atmosphere to share ourselves with and feel we have a lot to offer. We are social, artsy types, and thrive in creative environments where we can be of some use. About US We realize that one farm is not likely to 'do it all" but what we have listed are just personal interests of ours and even if you think you could trade labor for know-how on ONE topic, well that might be enough. It is one thing to read it from a book and another to successfully put it into practice. We are looking to practice varying tasks that can be use on a farm as we hope to someday run a country store that sells various farm made products as well as acts as a sort of social hub for music and artistic talents in the area. We also hope to eventually facilitate outdoor education and/or work with wilderness therapy programs. It's a mouthful, but one step at a time. Additionally, learning how to better work within a closed system and within a sustainable framework that is "oh so attainable" if the realization is there. While we have some base knowledge about a few subjects we are interested in learning more about things like properly tending bees for honey, cheese making, if you run a bakery and are willing to help transform our pie and bread skills into great masterpieces, making soaps from farm products, sheering sheep, companion planting, beneficial insects, soil health, making tinctures, show us more about medicinal herbs or plant id, work with dairy, beef and/or humanely tending all other animal counterparts (swine, swine chickens, horses, goats, sheep, etc), fruit trees, (importantly) business management, interested in creative artistic endeavors like pottery or woodworking shops, or if you simply have figured out creative ways to do the ordinary farm task... For the love of Pete, teach us more, and in turn, you will have two eager folks to help get to where you are going this season. We can't stress how excited we are for this new chapter and will likely be visiting farms for a few years before we settle in one place permanently. We are not strangers to hard work , getting dirty, or living rustically. We wear Carharts and bibs just for fun (because it's fun staying warm and dry). Additionally, we both can drive a stick shift, (Cassandra has been on a few tractors) and we have an all wheel drive vehicle. Paul 27, Cassandra 25. We both have four year degrees. Cassandra- Has two full seasons in and has about five years working "partial" seasons mostly on veggie farms. Has worked on two dairy farms, one commercial, the other small organic, greenhouse, landscaping etc. Strives to learn about care for livestock (weakest point of knowledge). Turned down farm manager position for this season to keep exploring. Competed on a timber sports team in college and is not a stranger to an axe, or a chainsaw. Went to school for hort. and conservation and BA in Anthropology. Paul- Grew up a farm boy in Upstate NY and wants to reconnect with the good life. While growing up on the farm which was mostly livestock, he had the experience of working with horses, cows, pigs, chickens and goats. He is looking to expand his knowledge in all areas of farm/homesteading/permaculture and self-sustenance to one day own a farm to raise a family upon. Willing to do any job thrown his way, loves people. Paul currently runs a kitchen in a place on the water in sunny Florida. Paul is looking forward to getting back to the land learning more skills to help him achieve a good life living simply. Has BA in Pol Sci and Creative Writing. Financially, we do need a way to make some money, at least enough for the essentials and a little something to walk away with at the end of the season to get us to our next destination. We plan to travel abroad in the cooler months. It's a fair request but I know some places can only offer so much and we are aware of the logistics of this type of endeavor. If you cannot offer much monetarily, is there a way we make make a living off the farm that doesn't come directly out of your pocket? Willing to try and make something work for both ends. We are folks that pull our weight and ask a lot of questions. Looking for a very interactive partnership as guests on your farm. There is a pup involved- a very farm oriented and gracious best friend, but we can only assume that some farms will be less accommodating here. Understandable. For farms that are doggie friendly- Sammy is great with the kiddos and other animals. It's not his first farm rodeo. Boxer/German Shepherd. Cassandra has raised him since he was 9 weeks old and is four years old. We are open to all possibilities so if what we have going on interests you, or you would like to discuss options, please give us a shout! Here is our phone number and email address, please get a hold of us anytime. Email or phone is the best means of contact. Paul, Cassandra and the Sam. 315.753.2041charring@oswego.edu

ATTENTION all hardy travellers, beginning and experienced farmers, homesteaders, and teachers! We are currently looking for individuals or couples interested in doing a work-exchange on our farmsite located in the Amazon region of Peru. We are a young farming family (John originally from Lima, Peru; Lauren from the USA; and our daughter) that have been homesteading here in the region since 2009. We have recently moved onto a new 3acre site within walking distance of the small city, Moyobamba, also known as the City of Orchids. We are building a small market farm that will eventually fund an educational center for local youth, focused on teaching and supporting organic growing methods, traditional crafts (weaving, arts, cooking, building), and otherwise sustainable lifestyles that until recently were the norm here. We grow other 100 varieties of organic vegetables, fruits, flowers, medicinal and culinary herbs, and other useful plants. We combine organic growing methods, permaculture techniques, and traditional Peruvian agricultural methods to produce high-quality fresh produce, and are the only producers of organic vegetables in the region. We also hope to coordinate with local reforestion efforts to grow seedling trees of rare and native species. Future projects include building and promoting bicycle-powered farm-tools, preparing plant-based medicines, ecological building, building traditional mud oven, and more sustainable irrigation systems, and workshops for the public.   We are looking for helpers that are interested in working 4-6 hours a day in exchange for room and board. (NOTE: since we have very recently begun here, housing may mean tenting in the early stages, but there are opportunities to build ecological living structures on-site).  We work early mornings to beat the midday heat, but all volunteers will have plenty of free time to take advantage of local trails for hiking and biking, spend time in the city (we are a 20 minute walk from center town), and other pursuits. We invite individuals or couples with or without experience, but expect people that enjoy time working outdoors, spending some elbow grease, and can take the jungle heat!!! THere also exists the possibility of long-term position with living-stipend for dedicated individual. Opportunities abound for personal projects, we hope to inspire a collective shared space, and there are opportunities to connect with other local growers/ volunteer projects. Spanish speaking is very useful when travelling in Peru, but English is also spoken in our home. wonderful chance to get to really practice and learn Spanish! Moyobamba is a small city in the center of plenty of agriculture: reknowned coffee growing, rice production, tropical fruits, and medicinal plants. Large central market, decent nightlife, and a couple "super"markets in town center...   Please contact us for more information! We look forward to meeting some great people! Update for those who know i have been here for 2 1/2 yrs with no bathroom: I put in the septic tank for the grey water system / worm farm septic system i am creating. Next i will build the addition with composting toilet for the poo. That will have the shower stall in it and laundry and composting toilet and a stone/brick oven for baking breads etc. That room is only 12ft by 12ft. It will have a 5 ft tall space below the floor for the 55gallon drums for collecting poo. It will also have a concrete dividing wall to separate the cleanout of the stone/brick oven. That will be acessable from outside. The drums will roll on carts and be rotated in place as needed. Over 2 yrs time they will compost and eventually be used for tree fertilizer. Spring is right around the corner and my garden is a wonderful 2/5 of an acre with fruit trees berries and grapes and garlic and asparagus coming in and needing help with veggie planting and building cold frames. The soil is very well fertilized and has produced many bountiful crops. The acre across my trout stream has been seeded for a future grazing area. Its clear because it has local electric wires to neighbors running across it. I have approval for making a watering area for grazing animals by the trout stream. The barn is almost done and soon i will be raising quail and pheasents in each side with long 17 ft flying pens 8 ft tall. Acessable to feed them from the barns interior. I may even add nesting boxes on the interior walls. I have funds enough to slowly get these things done by summer time. I just need some help and a potential partner or partners to join me. So far i feel like the little red hen who has done it all myself. I don't want to be that i do want to share it with someone who helps me. However, i will get it done eventually by myself. The upstairs bedrooms of the house can be heated with floor registers and wood stoves. I and my mom sleep in livingroom due to her age and my need to care for her thru the night. There is no place to build more buildings, except a greenhouse. We can though make an addition to the side of this building. We can also make an upstairs bathroom above the soon to be built downstairs bathroom. That could allow a person separate space on second floor except they might want to sleep outside in hot summers. Though it could have a outside deck off the 2nd floor as well on the north exposure for outside sleeping on those few hot summer nights. We could though in the mean time pump the cold air from the basement thru ducts to the 2nd floor with powerful fans or you could sleep there as i have a bed there too. The house is completely furnished. summer tents are ok though. Yes there is much we can do here that can be done. I am slowly getting it done and would love some help / partners. Is that you? PS: I do plan to get a horse and buggy again and use that for short trips around this amish community. NOTE: You can be an older person as i am in my late 50's and mom is 90 but i accept all ages here. I do not accept smokers or drugs and i can feed you and we eat all types of food and so must you.

  • Everblossom Farm wrote on on 06 Feb 2013

Everblossom Farm begins the 2013 edition Intern Search! The intern positions begin in April and last through October. We're flexible on timeframe and are happy to receive resumes any time of year, as we have job opportunities year round. We are located in a semi rural region of South-central Pennsylvania. Baltimore, Washington D.C., and Philadelphia are within a one- to two-hour drive of our farm. Smaller nearby towns and cities include historic Gettysburg, York, Harrisburg, Carlisle, and Hanover. Our farm is an ideal place to learn what makes a CSA successful and how to market quality produce in different venues. unique 190-acre farm offers broad experiences in sustainable agriculture and Certified Organic farming.  Every season we explore new ways to diversify our farm and meet local demand for fresh, organic products. For ten years we have been expanding the farm to include 15 acres of organic vegetable production for a 150-member summer CSA, a 90-member winter CSA, and sales at farmers' markets, a health food store, and restaurants. Products include organic seasonal vegetables and berries, and winter vegetables grown in our passive solar greenhouse. We sell only what we grow ourselves in our great soil at my family's historic farmstead. Additionally, every intern gets hands-on, practical training in all aspects of vegetable production - an education that's beneficial for a lifetime. Interns need not have experience, we are ready and willing to train! Housing is provided (at no cost, as part of compensation) for any staff member that requires it. Daily transportation is not provided. Staff members have access to organic farm produce and meat for meals, but are responsible for all other food and pantry items. This farm is a monumental labor of love, each and every day.  We cannot accept applicants who have a half-hearted interest in farming, or in food; the commitment and care required to do this job well can only be sustained by a full-blown interest and a readiness to escalate your work ethic.  We are also supremely dedicated to our CSA members, and refuse to offer them anything less than the very best.  Check out our website everblossomfarm.com and blog everblossomfar.blogspot.com.  Please send cover letter and resume to elaine@everblossomfarm.com
