The community garden project is well under way with four, almost five fences completed. The  beneficiaries work for a few solid hours from six in the morning, before the sun gets too hot to plant. It has been amazing to watch as the community works together to make this project happen. We started out by digging trenches on all four sides. Then we poured water into each trench. Once each trench was moist, we began in teams; one team held the espadillo posts, four or five at a time, and the other team shoveling the dirt back into the trench. As we had a good team with us, the  process worked extremely fast and we were able to complete one plot per day. The seeds have arrived from the municipality and La Mariposa staff will be taking a handful of beneficiaries to a compost training on Thursday. Come and volunteer with our families to help them build their gardens!

La Mariposa has begun a community garden project! We will be partnering with the municipality of La Concepcion and one of our guests, Michael Richardson, an expert in community gardening, to help twenty-six families start up their own vegetable plots. La Mariposa will be providing a living fence made up of espadillo, a plant native to the area that makes for great protection against roaming animals. We will also be providing worm composting to each family. We are currently looking for volunteers to help build the fence and to help set up compost system.  This is a great way to get involved in community development and to learn more about more about sustainable  agriculture! Please see our blog: www.mariposaschool.wordpress.com and website www.mariposaspanishschool.com for more information on the project and to find out how you can get involved!

Our long-term volunteer organic farmer has, after three months, decided to move on. We just started up our third farm on a small plot of land on our property and we can use all the help we can get! The local Nicaraguan farmers love working alongside volunteers, so if you're looking to practice your Spanish please check us out! Blog: http://mariposaschool.wordpress.com/
