The first organic farm in the Ann Arbor area, est. 1972. Experience all aspects of small-scale, intensive organic vegetable production. Also get behind-the-scenes as we plan and produce Holler Fest, a celebration of local food, music and community - now in its fourth year.
Produce is direct-marketed through our well-established market stall at the the vibrant Ann Arbor Farmer's Market, as well as through our three-year-old CSA. The market season starts in May with seedlings for area gardens, and continues with a full variety of garden vegetables and some fruits until mid-late October. We like interns to stay at least a month, but prefer longer commitments. We can use help from April until November.
Our farming methods rely more on hand labor than machinery; Frog Holler Farm interns are generally fit, flexible, and don't mind getting their hands dirty! There are some options for accommodations in terms of private or communal, but all living spaces are on the rustic side. Mid-day meals are generally taken together and cooking/cleaning tasks are shared. Food basics are provided and there are facilities for preparing your own food as desired. Sorry, we can't accommodate smokers. In addition to room, board and lots of experience, we provide a stipend that can increase with experience and time on the farm.
We are five miles from the nearest small town and travel the 35 miles to Ann Arbor twice weekly for market and supplies. Extracurricular options at Frog Holler are music, yoga, volleyball and other sports, and whatever interests the intern team brings. As a second-generation organic farm, the work is managed by Billy, Kenny and Edwin King, with 2-3 full-time interns and occasional part-time help. The work style is intense but friendly; our smaller scale allows opportunities for intimate involvement in day-to-day decisions and projects.
