Ponderay Garden Center was named one of the 100 revolutionary Garden Centers in the US by Garden Center Today magazine. Our focus is home food production and the creation of a local food system by educating members of our community. This year we are carrying 45 species a total of 84 varieties of edible perennials, as well as a wide variety of climate specific annuals. We are also in the process of developing a permaculture based demonstration site called Sonnenschein Farm based on designs developed with Albert Bates at a Financial Permaculture workshop sponsored by Gaia University. Right now we have a 60' X 60' garden, a vermicomposting operation, a community composting facitily, and 3 biochar retorts. Throughout the year we hold several events and many classes to educate our community on the importance of developing a local food system. So far this year we have had classes on:
- Bare Root Basics
- Container Planted Potatoes
- Building Lasagna Beds or Easy Raised Bed Gardening
- Composting Basics
- Vermiculture
... and we plan to add many more in the future including raising your own meat with rabbits, seed saving, biochar making, ethanol production, mycology, and aquaponics. This year we have added a music venue capable of holding 700 people and will be putting on 10 concerts for local causes, including local food system causes.
We are looking for 1 or 2 people to dedicate themselves to a cooperative learning experience as an intern. Responsibilities will include maintaining the gardens, working with the worms, making compost and possibly working in the natural food cafe. We would work with the interns to create a 25 - 30 hour per week schedule that would work for everyone. In return we will provide room, board and a small stipend as well as classes in subjects the interns are interested in including nursery management.
