The Farm on Grand Island

We are a business start-up called The Farm on Grand Island. The Farm is a beautiful 100 acre property on Grand Island in the San Francisco Bay Delta. This is a gorgeous property that’s just 30 min south of Sacramento and a little over an hour northeast of Oakland/San Francisco.

We are literally starting from ground zero and aim to build a business based on community farming, viticulture, horse riding and water sports. This property has been a family home for the last several decades and the land it’s on was leased out to a commercial monocrop farmer in the past. We want to see this place grow to the potential it really has! Our vision is to become the wave of the future where farming is accessible to everyone through membership to our farm club. We are looking for interns to help get this place on its feet and into the public eye.

Positions General Description

The Farm is a start-up and is not yet operational. Interns will benefit by learning the ins and outs of starting a business, learning from our mistakes and successes. All interns must be able to work independently and enjoy living in a communal environment. Learn by doing is the angle we take at the Farm as there is always so much to do!

Interns will be expected to work about 25 hours a week. Five hour days five days a week. Depending on crop needs and weather some days may be longer or shorter but we aim to create a regular schedule for folks. In exchange Interns receive full room and board. Cooking duties will rotate amongst the farm crew as well as basic clean up chores (trash, compost, kitchen clean-up etc.) Flexibility possible for those needing outside part time work.

Interns will be involved from the big to small scale projects such as working on our 1 acre demonstration farm sites to helping host Farm parties! We are starting over 50 varieties of heirloom vegetables, melons, flowers and herbs plus several hybrids. Tasks will range from greenhouse work to cultivation, irrigation, transplanting and harvesting, hosting arties, workshops, cooking and building. As the farm manager I am happy to share everything I know about farming and love to learn from others as well!

Desirable candidates will be very flexible and understand that patience is a virtue. As new developments are made each day interns must be self-motivated, innovative thinkers with excellent follow through. Detail oriented individuals with a love of outdoor work are the dynamic combination we are looking for. Some experience or a passion for working with vegetables, love of wine, water sports and marketing sustainable farming are a plus.
