We are located outside Dale (has a convenience store and café).
Lockhart and Bastrop are about 15 minutes away. Downtown Austin is just
an hour away.
Our farm is just under 18 acres - 4 acres cleared pasture and the rest open woods. The soil is sandy loam.
We have a small CSA operation. The garden is a 1/3 acre intensively
grown plot of a wide variety of vegetables. We also have started an
orchard and berry patch.
Volunteers/interns primarily work in the garden and our woodlots. In the
garden, you can expect to weed, kill pest insects, mulch, prepare beds
for planting, plant, harvest, and help pack CSA deliveries. In the
woodlot, you can expect to collect deadfall, chop wood, and chip mulch.
Other activities include mowing, tilling, cleaning animals pens, and
cleaning other farm facilities.
We raise chickens and ducks (for eggs) and dairy goats (~6 milkers). We also have a few sheep and a donkey.
Volunteers/interns may be asked to help with basic animal chores (feed, water,
etc). If interested, we can teach hand milking and cheese making, but
these activities will not be part of your regular responsibilities.
Along with farming activities, we typically have a construction
project (barns, housing, etc.) We have a general workshop and a
blacksmith shop. We are working towards making the farm as energy
independent as possible. We have converted some of our farm equipment
to be all electrical and our tiller to run on biodiesel.
Volunteers/interns are needed year-round and we can accommodate 4-6
individuals. We can
accommodate any length of stay and prefer a 2 week minimum stay. You
are expected to work at least 30 hours per week. Our volunteers/interns generally
work 5 days a week, but we are open to other schedules.
We provide 3 prepared vegetarian meals a week. All vegetables,
milk, eggs and cheese are included. The kitchen has 'basic' kitchen
items - flour, sugar, salt, condiments, etc.
There is no public transportation in the area. We can provide rides
to and from Austin on a fairly regular basis. For longer term volunteers/interns
we can allow use of our farm truck.
We speak English and some Spanish. Our family is vegetarian but we aren't opposed to others eating meat here.
Older children negotiable. Sorry no pets.
