We
have been in operation for 6 years. We have 2 acres of active veggie
production and 4 acres in annual cover crops. Our large hoophouse
produces tomatoes in the summer and hardy greens all winter. We start
all of our own seedlings, but they're grown out for us by a nearby farm.
Field work is performed by a variety of machines at a variety of
scales: large tractors for primary tillage, walking tractors
(rototilllers) for secondary tillage, small tractors for weed
cultivation and plenty of hand tools. All veggies are harvested by hand
and washed on farm before being sent to several farmers market and
restaurants in Orono, Waterville and midcoast Maine. We often
participate in research projects with faculty at the University of
Maine's Sustainable Ag Program and we were awarded a SARE grant in 2007
to research and develop innovative crop planning techniques.
As our farm continues to grow and thrive, we will be working on a number
of building, construction and carpentry projects. (8x8' Cool-bot
walk-in cooler, Washing & packing shed, 30x96 hoophouse, sheds, etc)
Exposure to these projects will be particularly beneficial to anyone
looking to start their own farm.To read more about out farm apprenticships, go to the
MOFGA Apprenticeship Page and look for our listing (#PEN-07, at the bottom).
