7.5 acre sustainable farm with two running streams on both sides. Located on the Hamakua Coast, 5 miles north of Hilo, Hawaii on the Big Island of Hawaii.
We produce our own manure for all our vegetables using "Green Alga Technology" Using Tilapia fish in multiple 300 gallon tanks. An all gravity flow system using no electricity. We raise 300 chickens for eggs, manure and bred stock. We incubate and raise pullets. Planting, cutting, chopping, harvesting, cleaning and pressing Sugar Cane. We make Sugar Cane Juice and market the juice as well as frozen 100% fruit smoothies made from our fruit and fruit from other farms. Nursery stock. Plants of all kinds, palms, fruit, ornamental, trees, tropical plants and flowers. Crops, 150 stands of bananas, coffee, corn, beans, snap peas, kale, chard, tomatoes, carrots, ,eggplant, peppers, passion fruit, oranges, lemons, limes, tangerines, avocados, and many other tropical fruits and vegetables. Projects, A) Planting 300 more stands of bananas B) finish a complete aquaponic gravity flow fish/chicken fertilizer system C) new raised beds in our two cover houses for growing root vegetables D) Starting a Mulching System. E) Planting and re-potting area for the Nursery. F) expanding the chicken area. We are an active CSA farm that requires some hand weeding and cleaning of chicken waste areas for the collection of fertilizer. Suggested length of stay for a Farm Guest is 3 months. We have a two room Bed and Breakfast. Some maintenance will be require for the up keep of the Bed and Breakfast. We have a shared room open for use with a shared bath and private entry. We would need the cooperation of anyone staying in this room to keep all levels of noise to a minimum for the respect to the other guests in rooms near by and to be very courteous and well mannered when a guest might be encountered. Work starts bright and early with breakfast at 7:00am. Farm Guests will prepare their own meals in a shared kitchen, basic food is provided. We will start our farming adventure at 8:00am and take a lunch break at about 11:00am; and begin again about Noon and end at about 3:30pm. You will be learning all the aspects of vegetable growing, animal care, preparing fields, and learning about “Green Alga Technology”.
We are looking for Farm Guests that are self-motivated, organized, clean and neat, mature and respectful attitude, willing to put in some hard work, as well as learning what we do and how we do it. Non-complaining with a good attitude when working with others. We have a Zero Tolerance Policy… meaning we cannot allow Farm Guests who have issues to remain on the farm. This is not to scare you off, this is to assure you that we are serious about farming and taking care of the growing grounds and our animals. So anyone coming as a Farm Guest who does not take it seriously, will not follow the rules or has issues will not remain on the farm. No drugs, drinking, or smoking allowed. Please do not waste someones chance to come to our farm if you are not truly interested in learning to farm or learning how to educate others on this special program. If you need more clarification on this, please call us. Two days a week will be for rest and relaxation. Nearby area sights and fun things to do include Beaches, Secret ponds, Botanical Gardens, Old Hilo Town, Water Falls, Volcano, Parks. We can pick up at the airport. Local County Bus service and Convenience Store located less than a mile from the farm. English is spoken. Children and pets are not accepted.
