We have an immediate opening for the winter 2013 season. I am also looking for two interns for the spring-fall 2013 season so if you are not available immediately please apply to start in late April or Ealy May.
Acorn Hill Farm is a very small scale goat farm and micro-creamery in the Catskill-Mid-Hudson Valley region of NY state. We manage our herd of dairy goats (miking 25-30 does) using organic methods and, as a NOFA-NY member, we have taken the Farmer's Pledge which we feel is more comprehensive and a better fit to our size than organic certification. We produce a variety of goat milk cheeses and goat milk fudge for sale at regional farmers markets and we also sell a limited supply of goat meat and other seasonal farm products.
We are seeking a intern to learn organic goat management along with cheesemaking and marketing. Candidates should be physically strong (must be able to lift at least 50lbs) and detail oriented and able to work independently once a skill is learned. Internships typically run from November thru April (includes kidding and kid care) and May thru November (includes farmers market season and breeding season). We provide housing in a one bedroom apartment in our home that includes utilities and wifi and a stipend based on season and skill level. This is an opportunity to learn by doing and we hope our interns leave feeling capable and informed about all phases of small scale goat farming and cheesemaking. We are located in a rural area so a car is very helpful and a clean drivers license is required. Candidates should be comfortable with being in a rural area where entertainment options are limited and the scenery is beautiful. Nearby are hiking trails and state parks but most are further than one would want to travel to without a car.
