This peaceful organic grain farm in SE Saskatchewan has been within the family for nearly 70 years. Ed and Gail are in retirement and currently rent out the grain growing land to an organic producer, but continue to farm the home quarter, on which they have several fruit and vegetable gardens as well as Kathadin sheep, laying hens and cats.
Ed and Gail have been fulfilled by the magic of what can be produced from the land but would like to be able to leave for periods to be nearer family in another province. They are interested in having someone or a family stay at the farm, either to farm-sit, or live on a short term rental. If you are interested, please contact us.
This land has been farmed organically since 1979. Everything on this farm is done without chemicals. The producing gardens include: several vegetable gardens, a potato patch, saskatoon trees, raspberries, currents, strawberries, some apple trees and other fruits which haven't yet reached their prime. There is an outdoor root cellar to store vegetables in the winter. On the premises, there is also a mill building, workshop with pit, barn and chicken barn. The home has three bedrooms, office and a flex space that can be used for sleeping. The sun room with wood burning fire place is a lovely place to relax. There are two decks and a balcony on the second level. Wildlife such as many types of birds and often deer can be spoted from the decks. The house is heated by geo-thermal heating and water is supplied by a well. This home is set up for near off-the-grid living.
Maintaining an interest in the growing, cleaning and milling of their grains, Ed and Gail have preserved grain-cleaning equipment (some that dates back as far as 50+ years old) and added to it, making it possible to clean small amounts of grain for home milling. A 16-inch stone grinder is on the grounds and will mill different types of flours.
Preserving and storing food has always been a priority. There are many canning jars and a stove top canner, as well as tools for blanching before freezing. The outdoor root cellar is complimented by a basement cellar.
The farm is located a twenty minute drive from the town of Melivlle, which has all the amenities one could need.
