Mama Roja is a sustainable living and learning center and a homestead working toward self-sufficiency in the sub-tropical jungle hills of Misiones. We have a year-round organic garden, fruit trees, grains, and yerba mate. We experiment with various agricultural methods (Permaculture, Bio-Intensive, low-till, Fukuoka, etc.) We also create natural buildings using local, site-found, and salvaged materials (wood, Earth, stones.) We raise dairy dairy cows and chickens, and hope to include bees soon; have Solar Electricity, Composting Toilets; practice Seed Saving, Food Preservation, and Reforestation. Also, practice Yoga and Meditation. Program: We are currently taking volunteers, long-term apprentices, and interns. We are looking for people to help out with a little of everything (gardening, contruction, reforestation, carpentry, food making and preservation, dairy cow and chicken care, fungus identification, medicinal plant work, and creative projects.) We offer healthy food, nature hikes, swimming, yoga and meditation, and hands-on learning about sustainable living. We usually ask for 4-5 hours of work a day, 6 days a week. Volunteers stay in tents and we all share the communtiy kitchen and eat meals together. Very simple and rustic living. We ask that volunteers contribute with positive attitudes and responsible awareness. Additional comments: We want to be constructive, responsible beings, which for us means living as ecologically as possible, cultivating a deep partnership with the land we live on. This also means sharing the learning with other people by offering a place to exchange knowledge and skills, gain new insights and understanding, and reconnect with nature's wisdom and savor her delights. By cultivating awareness of our attitudes and actions, we can have a positive effect on our place in this world. Please visit our blog to see photos and learn more.
