Sorry, we are full. We are no longer looking to fill a position for one or possibly two apprentices for the 2011
farming season- May through Sept/October. We are a women-owned farm located on a small, non-ferry served island in the San Juans, growing a full range of veggies, herbs, garlic, berries, and cut flowers for several Farmers Markets, a small CSA , local restaurants, and a food co-op. . While not certified organic, we are dedicated to ecological farming practices and incorporate elements of biodynamic agriculture and permaculture principles into our approach to market farming. Other area of focus include worm composting, compost teas, small grain growing, seed saving, food preservation, and general homesteading skills. Reducing reliance on fossil fuels is a major goal. We are off-grid and solar powered, run bio-diesel in our tractor for
tillage and cultivation, but do lots of hand work in our three acre
garden.
We will provide simple, private housing, food, and a small living stipend in exchange for relatively full time work on the farm to include all aspects of market farming: propagation and greenhouse work, composting, fieldwork, harvesting, helping at market, animal care, and more. Opportunities for learning will be experiential and will depend on the interests and motivation of the individual. The housing provided is off the farm and requires a short bicycle
commute. We can accommodate one person or a duo who would be willing to
share a small cabin.
It is important that you be mature, responsible, physically fit, and willing to work hard as part of our farm crew. Someone who is easy going with a sense of humor will also be appreciated. Hard work and long hours are much more fun with a light heart and positive attitude! We try to balance a focus on productivity and efficiency with the intention of enjoying ourselves and creating a lively, interesting work environment.
Living in this small community, there are also opportunities to check out other market farms on the island as well as having access to a wealth of local knowledge on all kinds of topics including: orcharding, seaweed, herbology, alternative energy, alternative building, forestry, marine stewardship, and music of all sorts...
