Circle Acres is a
radical living and ecological collective consisting of several different programs: a place to practice the
necessary skills to create a meaningful life that relies less on
destructive technologies, resource extraction and consumerism, and more
on a self sustaining ecosystem that provides its inhabitants and
community with nourishing relationships, hobbies, food, housing and medicine.
We utilize tools and techniques not bound by any time period or
geographic location and adapt them to our bioregion, to create a
place where people can participate in a living human habitat. We
observe and learn from diverse organisms working symbiotically that are
constantly bursting with abundance for its inhabitants and surrounding
community. We hope to grow a step beyond providing the community with
end result products, and also begin equipping people with the knowledge
and components to begin the regenerative process where they live.
It is our third year where we have started some projects and have many
more in the works, including: organic gardening and permaculture: seed
saving, hugelkultur, sheet mulching, scything, biochar, graywater, food
forest, mushroom logs, wild edible identification and harvesting,
grafting, medicinal herbs, vermicomposting; natural and reclaimed
material construction with bamboo, cob, slipstraw, strawbale and found
items; as well as other fun things like
dumpster diving, rainwater catchment, and woodworking.
We are located near Nicks Creek in the headwaters of the Cape Fear River
basin, also known as Silk Hope, NC. Our county is one of the leading
hubs for sustainable agriculture and the founding area of Crop Mob, a
peer group of new farmers. We also have one of the only Cooperative
Extension agents, Debbie Roos, who primarily deals with sustainable
agriculture; you can check out her site growingsmallfarms.wordpress.com
to find resources and workshops. There is also a grassroots music
festival (Shakori Hills) held down the road twice a year. Carrboro and
Greensboro are only 30 min. away. The small town of Pittsboro is only 15
minutes away which is the home to several organizations dealing with
all things sustainable, such as the Abundance Foundation, RAFI, Carolina
Farm Stewardship Association, Piedmont Biofuels, and the American
Livestock Breed Conservancy.
Program: 5hrs of hands on learning 4 days a week. Food is provided and we ask that you help out equally with cooking and dishes. Tent accommodation is the only option at the moment with access to a solar shower. We currently cannot accommodate children or pets and the only language spoken fluently is English. We are open to short stays 2-4 weeks year round with the option for longer stays if things are working out. Although we dabble in the large list of projects above, we’ve listed our main focuses for the moment so you may contact the person associated with the projects that best fit your interests.
