Hello all winter livestock farmers in need of an employee (or apprentice),
Sam and I are looking for a farm to spend this winter on, preferably where I can learn more about animal husbandry in any way, shape, or form- dairy- slaughtering- business plans, you name it. I am very interested learning about maple sugaring, too. Of course, like many others, I am learning in order to be able to get my own operation up and running in the future. I am available ASAP.
We (doggie and I) are from upstate NY and are willing to travel to find the right fit. I would like to stay in the NE this winter, preferably, but it's not necessary. If you are close ( five hours or less), we'll come for a visit first. If farther, we can Skype, or chit chat on the phone. Whatever works.
I have a solid base of knowledge in small scale- organic vegetable farming operations, a little in dairy, horses, and CSA. Again, where I have less experience is with animal husbandry and would really like to expand in this area. I am really interested in learning other creative crafts and skills- tincture making, woodworking, perfecting throwing on the wheel, but I know each farm has their own thing going on.
Lastly, I have a mindset to eventually find a good community to settle down in and the search begins now, but I suspect that will come with time.
Basically, you have two hardworking, trustworthy, and somewhat experienced hands at your disposal. Of course, I still have a lot to learn. In turn, I'm looking for housing (rustic is fine), a decent wage, and a place to contribute. A wage is important, as I am past the "intern" stage and I know what is expected of me as far as what hard work is. However, if you cannot offer a living wage, but are looking for a work/living exchange, if there are employment opportunities nearby, I am totally willing to look into it. Basically, I want to farm, but I need to survive too. Any savings I get from here on out will likely go into travel, which is just as important for my long term plans. Eventually, I would like to work in sustainable community development, abroad as well as in the good ol' US of A. Right now, I am planning a trip to Uganda/ South Sudan around February, but this date is somewhat flexible. Going with the flow for now, and if it seems like a good fit for both parties, maybe a longer stay would be best. I would like a place that would be flexible with my eventual hiatus, and my eventual return. Short term is alright too, if just for the winter. It all works out :)
So long for now, and please, don't hesitate to call or email. This site can get finicky.
