The Morning Star Ranch is a 65-acre certified organic farming community located in Northern San Diego County in Southern California. Approximately half of our farm is a 35-year-old avocado grove. We also have groves of grapefruit and Fuyu Persimmon trees. We have 5 acres of land we use for growing vegetables for our farm stand, weekly farmer’s markets, and for our community. We also have a small herd of Jersey cows, quite a number of goats and chickens, and a donkey named, “Jake.” When we say “community,” we mean that we are a very large extended family living here on the Ranch. We are composed of several married couples, single people, and about half of our number are children. We have several residences on our property, including two large yurts where the single men live. We are learning how to live sustainably, beginning with our relationships. We work together as much as possible and we home-school our children. We gather twice a day on the Ranch to share from our hearts, sing and dance together and offer up a prayer to God, who makes our life possible. We share all of our meals together. There is no drug or alcohol use on the Ranch, and we do not tolerate any kind of violent behavior, outbursts of anger, or abuse of any kind. We are a peace-loving, yet very zealous people. We like to promote things like kindness, respect and love in our midst.
Wwoofers are welcome year-round. We offer the opportunity to get involved in every aspect of our life. We expect those who come to work with us and attend our daily gatherings and meal times. If you’re looking for a place to work during the day and to go out and party in town at night, you wouldn’t fit in so well here. We get up early, work hard together and try to get to bed at a decent time at night. There are social times and on Saturday we enjoy our “Sabbath” where we rest from our labors and enjoy one another and take walks. On Sunday we sleep a little later, and usually intersperse social times with farm projects.
We also have opportunities to learn about construction and woodworking. We have people on the Ranch who speak English, Spanish and German. None of us who live here are smokers, but we don’t mind if people take a walk to smoke a cigarette. Please do not bring any pets, firearms, drugs, or alcohol. We do not allow unmarried people to sleep together, but we will make accommodations for married couples and families, and single people of course. Our diet consists mostly of the organic vegetables we grow, but we also eat some meat, cheese, eggs and fish. We can accommodate special diets within reason. We usually have a few to several “guests” staying with us at any time. We have never turned anyone away because we didn’t have space. You will find a visit to the Morning Star Ranch a life-changing experience, and some who come have never left. We hope you’ll come spend some time with us…
