Maverick Farms is still seeking full season apprentice applicants and short-term volunteers to join our team for the
2013 season. The apprenticeship runs until November 1.
Apprentices are exposed to all aspects of food production -- learning about propagation,
greenhouse management, soil health, tillage, harvesting, marketing, grazing, animal
health and husbandry, and many other related skills through hands-on work.
Apprentices work and live on the farm in a historic farmhouse in the heart of the Blue
Ridge Mountains. The farm is 60 acres; being mountainous and mostly wooded we
intensively grow vegetables on approximately 3 acres. We grow everything we can here.
In addition to many greens and vegetables, we have raspberries, apples, laying hens, two
dairy goats, and a pasture pork operation. Maverick Farms' produce, meat, and eggs are
distributed through two farmers markets, and a multi-farm CSA project.
We also manage the Farm Incubator and Grower Project -- FIG Farm -- just 3 miles
away. The FIG Farm is an initiative of Maverick Farms and provides land and resources
to beginning, landless aspiring farmers. We grow on and maintain this land as well.
This is a working apprenticeship as well as an educational experience. Applicants should
be prepared to work hard and commit themselves to the shared task of running a farm.
We work closely with apprentices, but at times you will be working independently.
While previous experience is not required, a strong interest in learning about farming
and a solid work ethic are a must. We see apprentices as an integral part of our farm,
not only as a source of labor but also as a source for innovation, rejuvenation, and the
thoroughness it helps us impart in passing on our knowledge and experience. Within our
everyday farm work, we work to tie into the larger social issues of food security, social
and environmental justice, education and health.
Housing: private room in the farmhouse with shared kitchen, living areas and bathroom
(there is plenty of space outside if apprentices prefer camping). We facilitate most of the
cooking and enjoy eating exceptionally well with producing most of our own ingredients.
Compensation: room and board at the farm and the invaluable educational opportunity
