We grow organic green and oolong tea with natural farming techniques of Masanobu Fukuoka and Mokichi Okada and Satoyama (or Traditional Japanese permaculture) design on the big island of Hawaii. Our natural farming focus on cultivating the soil through use of microorganisms, using no fertilizers and no pesticides neither organic, manure based, nor conventional.
We emphasize cultivating humble and pure minds to observe the natural environment through nature-centered farming. We work hard and learn together and do various sustainability projects.
We offer tea and meals from our volunteer garden maintained by you. Various vegetables and fruits, are available supplemented with purchased staple foods. Volunteers have a green building powered by the sun, a private hot outdoor shower, outhouse, and garden, and are working on doing more solar cooking and developing a rainwater catchment and solar water heating system. We also use vermi-culture system for feeding our chickens without use of imported grains.
Sporadically we have tea tasting and grading sessions where you can learn subtle difference of fine tea. They test your senses and understanding of how cultivation, harvest and processing result in finished tea quality, leaf shape, aroma, liquor color and flavor profile.
Tasks include preparing soil, weeding, harvesting, and many other tasks related to the propagation, growth, and planting of tea. We will support you in your learning and share ourselves and our resources with you. We ask 25 hours of work per week and have an intimate community of 2-4 volunteers on the farm at one time. We speak both Japanese and English.
