the Village on Sewanee Creek

The Village on Sewanee Creek is a self-sustaining community on the beautiful Cumberland Plateau.  As we build the community, we could use some help getting our organic community garden off the ground.

We are blessed with some wonderful amenities that make it a pleasure to grow food here.  Like…. a 2,000 square foot high profile, heated green house,  a catfish pond, the beginnings of a forest mushroom garden, fruit tree orchard, a wonderful amphitheater complete with a 22 foot wide outdoor movie theater and live performance stage.  We raise chickens and rabbits.  Miles of trails through our 500+ acre nature preserve complete with caves, waterfalls and rushing creek.   We have an active online farmer’s market nearby in Sewanee at the University of the South.

We are experimenting with steel shipping container construction, off grid power generation (wood gasification and bio-diesel generators).  There are lots of opportunities to learn sustainable living skills and possibly earn some land in the Village.

We will provide primitive shelter.  You are welcome to all the produce you can grow to consume or sell under the Sewanee Creek brand.  See our main website at www.sewaneecreek.com for more photos and contact information or just email me at info@sewaneecreek.com.

circleAcres

CircleAcres is a collective land project seeking to create a self sustaining ecosystem that provides its inhabitants and community with food, fuel, and medicine while moving away from mechanization, resource extraction and consumerism. Utilizing biological processes to meet our needs while making use of the unending stream of “waste” produced by the current system. We are nestled in Chatham County, NC a small community with a strong sustainable agriculture prescence.

It is our first year on the land so there are lots of projects underway and lots of learning opportunities to jump headfirst into. Some of the things you can potentially learn about while here include:

Permaculture, wildcrafting, rainwater catchment, human scale food production, sheet mulching, establishing a food forest, small scale animal husbandry, goat milking, growing medicinal herbs, making tinctures, vermicomposting, charcoal production, hugelkultur, growing mushrooms, graywater systems, grafting, seed saving, scything, dumpster diving, homemade potting soil from local materials, and cob construction.

We ask that work traders help out 20 hrs. a week with farm activities, and help on a rotational schedule with dish duties and cooking. Food will be provided along with tent accommodation. We are all omnivores but can accomodate vegetarians and vegans though there may be occasions you will have to take responsibility for your own meal needs. Circle Acres is still in its infancy so accommodations are rustic. We shower outdoors and get about 2 gallons of hot water at a time. So if you are in need of more traditional living quarters we may not be the best match, but if you have an adventorous heart and yearn to be a part of creating a Truly sustainable system you’ve found the right place.

no pets please.

Mountain Community and Family Farm

Small, organic farm in environmental, mountain community. Possible opportunities for social activism and work with mountain "expedition" program for  kids. We are Herb and Marnie Walters and we live in a long established  land trust community on 1,200 acres at the foot of the tallest mountain range east of the Rockies - the Black Mountains. This is an amazingly beautiful place with lots of interesting creative people living on both our land trust and in the surrounding community.  About fifty households share ownership of our land trust.  Our store-front food coop has over a hundred household memberships. We have lots of crafts people here, a crafts co-op, a Quaker meeting, alternative energy homes and resources, a lively community center, and an alternative school for kids. We are just 7 miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway and are surrounded by state parks and national forests.  We are an hour from Asheville, NC which is a really awesome city.

You can be working, learning and playing in four different capacities. 1. Work on our family homestead with organic garden, chickens, bees, three beef steers, a co-op milk cow, mushrooms and two horses. 2. Possibly help with a wilderness skills / outdoor education summer program for kids . Learn wild food foraging, fire by friction and other ancient earthskills   3. Possible work with Rural Southern Voice for Peace www.listeningproject.org) . RSVP's Listening Projects address peace, justice, environmental and health issues. 4. Learn about the land trust model of cooperative community.

Our  need is for one person who can stay at least a month, preferably 4-7 months  (March - Oct.). You will live in the downstairs bedroom of our house which is in the basement but it has a south facing window onto our fields and the Black Mountain range.. We ask for 20-30  hours per week (negotiable). You'll need your own transportation. gas and entertainment money.  We provide room and board which is not vegetarian but we have plenty of vegetarian food.. We need someone who can be self-motivated and work both with us and on your own with adequate guidance. This is farming primarily to sustain our simple, active lifestyle with some products to sell or barter with others. A simple resume from applicants would be helpful.
