Biosynergetics Institute

Are you an Eco-Activist keen to get involved in a hands-on permaculture project in South Africa?

Join us to live and work as an intern at our emerging ecovillage project in Johannesburg, the vibrant heart of South Africa.

The biosynergetics institute is located 20 minutes from central Johannesburg, 30 minutes from OR Tambo international airport, in the country suburb of linbro park. This project can offer 4-5 interns simple, self-catering accommodation in a training centre with shared bathrooms and kitchen.

Working to develop the project site, you will learn about and gain practical experience with the following:

  • Permaculture Gardening: Work and learn with our drylands permaculture garden - weeding, propagation, planting, mulching, pruning, harvesting, etc.
  • Ecological Design: Learn about systemic design applying permaculture, biosynergetics and other methods.
  • Natural Building: Develop and maintain site infrastructure using green building technology.
  • Rainwater Harvesting: Learn practically about eco-plumbing, ferrocrete, and other technologies.
  • African Herbs and Healing: Encounter some of the most powerful healing plants of Africa and encounter the ancient African healing tradition of Sangoma.
  • Chi Kung: Join our regular training sessions in this powerful healing art integrating breath, posture, movement and awareness.
  • Nature’s Path: Evolve your unique path to personal growth through contemplation and interaction with nature.
  • Workshops: Assist in organising and holding workshops at the centre, and get to participate at reduced cost.
  • Eco-village development: Play a role in the development of an exciting ecovillage community project.
  • Networking: Visit other permaculture initiatives and meet fellow permaculturists.
  • Community Outreach: Work to support permaculture projects in under-privileged communities around Johannesburg.
  • Culture: Experience the cultural wealth of South African arts, music, and performance.

circleAcres

CircleAcres is a collective land project seeking to create a self sustaining ecosystem that provides its inhabitants and community with food, fuel, and medicine while moving away from mechanization, resource extraction and consumerism. Utilizing biological processes to meet our needs while making use of the unending stream of “waste” produced by the current system. We are nestled in Chatham County, NC a small community with a strong sustainable agriculture prescence.

It is our first year on the land so there are lots of projects underway and lots of learning opportunities to jump headfirst into. Some of the things you can potentially learn about while here include:

Permaculture, wildcrafting, rainwater catchment, human scale food production, sheet mulching, establishing a food forest, small scale animal husbandry, goat milking, growing medicinal herbs, making tinctures, vermicomposting, charcoal production, hugelkultur, growing mushrooms, graywater systems, grafting, seed saving, scything, dumpster diving, homemade potting soil from local materials, and cob construction.

We ask that work traders help out 20 hrs. a week with farm activities, and help on a rotational schedule with dish duties and cooking. Food will be provided along with tent accommodation. We are all omnivores but can accomodate vegetarians and vegans though there may be occasions you will have to take responsibility for your own meal needs. Circle Acres is still in its infancy so accommodations are rustic. We shower outdoors and get about 2 gallons of hot water at a time. So if you are in need of more traditional living quarters we may not be the best match, but if you have an adventorous heart and yearn to be a part of creating a Truly sustainable system you’ve found the right place.

no pets please.

grey owl garden
we're interested most in: natural farming techniques/ecological gardening/permaculture/tending the wild, mushrooms & berries, wild animals, fermentation, crafts, simplicity, herbs, wildcrafting, solstice, fairies, dragonflies, (there're alotta insects, hella mosquitoes, no poisonous ones - aside from bees which we're also interested in), green anarchy, (r)evolution, magic, compost, horse manure, weeds, roadkill, fishing, flowers, strawberries, music, rhubarb wine, indigenous cultures, cattails, rewilding

the land: five acres, a little over one cleared and cultivated, just outside of fairbanks in the hills near the tanana river, beautiful, peaceful, basic, simple, small-scale, tranquilo

we grow subsistence & market foods and medicinal herbs, using a variety of gardening methods (as natural & simple as possible), permaculture heavy. excited to evolve a truly sustainable food system for the northern boreal forest. food forestry, alternative root crops, perennial foods, cultivating traditional wild foods, foraging.

disclaimer!!! small-scale tranqillo garden life. rootsy simple style. no "indoors," no electricity, no running water. not overly fixed on schedules.

we're looking for folks who are interested in pitching in with the work around the garden: weeding, watering, transplanting, water hauling, digging, manure spreading, cooking/cleaning, market and csa stuff, etc. plenty of work to do but we don't put it above all the other fun there is to have.

we can provide: place for tent and maybe a tent itself if needed, a screened-in cooking and hanging out space (the mosquitoes are thick at times), staple grains and plenty of veggies to eat (wild meat on occasion), foraging excursions, and perhaps some fun crafty things to do like leather stuff, wool stuff, and willow stuff.
